Transforming (Rotating) Sketches

In this tutorial you will make a twisted fan blade by lofting between an elliptical sketch and that same sketch (on a different workplane) rotated 45 degrees. In order to complete this tutorial you must understand how to loft. (see lofting tutorial)

  • Start a new design
  • Set the design file units to inches (Tools>Options>Units)
  • On the initial sketch, sketch an ellipse as shown
  • This represents the base of the fan blade. (Inner portion)

Now you will create a new workplane that is offset from the base workplane 15"

  • Use the workplane select tool to select the base workplane (this is the workplane that you just put the initial sketch on)
  • Select Workplane>New Workplane
  • In the New Workplane pop box choose, offset and input an offset of 15"
  • OK

You will now create a new sketch on the newly created workplane

  • Make sure the new workplane is selected
  • Workplane>New Sketch
  • Name the new sketch OUTER
  • OK

On the OUTER sketch you will now project the previously drawn ellipse onto the sketch

  • Use the Line Select Tool and select the previously drawn ellipse
  • Right Click and choose Project.
  • This will bring the ellipse in the initial sketch into the outer sketch. Note that a box appears on the ellipse which denotes a projected constraint.

In order to move the project ellipse you must know turn off the projected constraint.

  • Use the line select tool to highlight the ellipse.
  • Click on the Constraint Inspector on the constraint toolbar.
  • Uncheck the projected constraint.
  • OK

Note that the box has disappeared from the ellipse since Pro/D no longer considers it a projected object.

Now, you want to rotate the ellipse about a point that is 2" in from the sides. In order to do this you must place the coordinate axis at the point you want to rotate about. To help in the positioning of the axis you will draw some construction lines

  • Draw lines and toggle them to construction lines as shown.
  • To toggle to construction lines click Lines>Toggle Construction

Now move then coordinate axis to the point where the two construction lines intersect

  • Workplane>Reposition Axis
  • Click on the intersection of the construction lines to move the axis.

Remember, the position of the axis determines the point of rotation for the sketch!

Now you will rotate the ellipse sketch so that you will have an ellipse at an angle to loft back to the original ellipse.

First you must delete both of the construction lines or the ellipse will not rotate

  • Use the cutting tool to delete the construction lines
  • With the line select tool, select the ellipse
  • Edit>Transform
  • Click on the rotate button
  • Input 45 degrees for the angle of rotation
  • Click OK

The ellipse should now be rotated 45 degrees. Take note how the rotation occurs around the origin point of the axes.

You will now create a loft between the two ellipses that are separated by 15"

  • Feature>Loft through Profiles
  • Use the line select tool to select the two ellipses.
  • As you select each ellipse the sketch name should appear in the loft pop box
  • Make sure the loft line connects as shown. If you don't understand the loft line you need to do the lofting tutorial
  • Click OK
