Sweeping along a Trajectory

The sweep along trajectory command allows you to draw a trajectory (path) and then draw a profile and have the extrusion of the drawn profile follow the trajectory. This is extemely useful for drawing pipes, bike frames and a variety of other things

  • File>New>Design
  • Start a new sketch and call it sweep traj
  • Sketch the trajectory that the sweep will follow.
  • Make each curve tangent to the strainght lines and tangent to each other.
  • Select the top line and the top arc then hit in the constraint menu
  • Select both arcs then hit
  • Select the bottom arc and the bottom line then hit
  • Ensure that the trajectory goes thru the lateral plane. This is because you will be drawing the profile on the lateral plane and the trajectory must intersect with the plane that the profile is drawn on!
  • Use the select workplane tool and select the workplane that is perpendicular to the plane you just drew on.
  • You can also select a workplane by right clicking on it in the object browser

  • Create a new sketch on the lateral workplane called sweep profile
  • Create a profile sketch of a hole tube (outer radius = .5", inner radius = .4")

  • Sweep the profile down the trajectory by hitting
  • Choose sweep profile as the profile and sweep traj as the path, then click ok to complete the sweep
