Drawing Formats and Templates

Pro/Desktop has two features that help you make 2D drawings. They are formats and templates

Formats: You can set the paper layout, borders and style by creating a standard format. Formats are created by making a standard .dra file and saving it. This tutorial will walk you thru making a simple format.

Templates: If you want all of your 2D drawing to have the same view layout you can make a template that automatically extract views from a 3D object. You can specify a format (which you can make) for a template.

Creating a Format

This format is created in a standard drawing file. You can add boxes and text that will appear in every drawing that uses the format.

Tools>Options>Units --> Set Both Paper and model distances to inches

File>New>Drawing

Make sure the specify format radio button is select

Use the ANSI-A standard (11" x 8.5")

Click the scale tab and set the scale to 1:1

Click the drawing standards tab. Set the predefined standards to ANSI (inch)

  • Draw a rectangle that goes over the dashed lines. This will put an outer boarder around your 2D drawing.
  • While the entire rectangle is still highlighted select lines>offset>-.2
  • Use your select lines tool and shift select all of the lines.
  • Fix all of the selected lines by using the fix tool

  • In the lower right corner add a boxes for text by using the line tool.
  • Use the dimension tool to ensure that spacing is correct. (all dimensions are in inches)
  • These empty boxes can be used for Title, Drawer Name, Scale, Units etc...

  • Save the file as ansia_format.dra
  • Close the drawing file

  • To use the pre-made format
  • File>New Drawing
  • Select the Use existing format radio button
  • Browse to the saved format file you just created
  • Set the scale and drawing standard (ANSI-inches)

Your drawing now has a standard format and views are ready to be added
