Making and Applying Decals in the Photo Album

You can apply decals like company logos to surfaces inside the photo album. Think of them like stick stickers on any surface that you want. Creating the bitmap files need for decal might seem intimidating at first but once you get the hang of it, it is easy!

Creating the Decal

To create a decal you will need TWO bitmap files

bmp #1: Get you logo/graphic etc and save it as a bitmap file (bmp) in the Pro/D bitmap directory. (Program Files /PTC/ ProDesktop2001i2/ Program/ bitmaps)

bmp #2: The mask. The mask is simply how to define which elements of bmp #1 are going to be transparent (invisible) The mask bmp should be done in gray scale. In the mask bmp whatever is black will be transparent. What every is white will allow the image of bmp #1 to show. Shades of gray will partially mask the bmp #1 image. The closer the shade of gray is to black the more it will mask it.

Look at bmp#2. This is the mask. Imagine it over top of bmp #1. The white areas of the mask let bmp #1 show through. The black areas of the mask block out bmp #1 (and thus make those areas transparent)

bmp #1: prod.bmp

bmp #2:prodmask.bmp

Right click the above images and save them to Program Files /PTC/ ProDesktop2001i2/ Program/ bitmaps

Applying the Decal

  • Make sure you have saved the above bmp files in the Pro/D bitmap directory
  • Load coffee-mug-assy.des from the Pro/D samples directory
  • Start a new album file
  • File>New>album>ok
  • Bring in the image of the coffee cup
  • Image>New Image>coffee-mug-assy.des>OK
  • Change you object browser to materials
  • Click the plus sign on custom to show all the custom bmp files. You should see the two bmp files that you just saved

To apply a decal you must first select the surface that you want to apply the decal to.

  • Use the surface select tool and select the outside of the coffee cup
  • Image>Apply Decal
  • For the logo bitmap choose prod
  • For the Transparency bitmap choose prodmask
  • Click OK

  • Move the decal around to the side of the cup by click and dragging the blue circle.
  • Rotate the decal via blue circle so that the black arrow is pointing up.
  • You can also resize the decal via clicking and dragging the yellow boxes
  • Click the update button to see the finished decal

Notice how the black areas of the mask (bmp #2) are transparent and turns bmp#1 into a "clear" sticker.

Caution: Decal should be applied last since any surfaces applied after the decal will cover up the decal. So if you want the cup to be make of polished plastic, do that first, then apply the decal.

Warning: If you are apply a decal to a finished surface you will not see the decal resize/rotate box unless you rotate the image to get rid of the current rendering. (the rendered surfaces seems to cover up important things)

How about a PTC Decal? Just save these images into the bitmap directory
